Yep, you picked up on the testing discrepancy and you nailed it, what are the testing condition, since no way an automatic is better or on par with a quartz… sadly aberrations like this and lack of honesty is why the damn watch industry is going downhill, killed by iwatch and ghocks mainly! Automatics are impressive but they are jewelry that have the complication of telling time.

Rolex uses their “own accuracy testing” protocol: the Superlative Chronometer Standard, its like auto manufactures test their own cars in house for MPG and in reality you never get the MPG. Was the automatic worn everyday or just stationary in a consistent room temp?

Even the worst quartz most likely would be better, sadly!

Comment on Watch Accuracy: Rolex vs. Casio by Fred https://thetruthaboutwatches.com/2021/06/watch-accuracy-rolex-vs-casio/#comment-40156 Mon, 27 May 2024 06:14:38 +0000 https://thetruthaboutwatches.com/?p=15239#comment-40156 I have recently discovered the Timegrapher hobbiest mechanical timing analyzer. It allows one to set their mechanical watch to be accurate to 0 seconds per day (in a given orientation, at a given temperature). But as soon as the orientation or temperature changes the accuracy is lost. This is on both Japanese and Swiss movements. I wondered about the marketing of the accuracy of these high-end mechanical movements and would love to hear how COSC certification actually stacks up in real world use. I stumbled across this site hoping to hear from someone reporting on how their mechanical watches stand up to quartz watches.

I know this is an older post, but I appreciated reading it. As a newcomer to mechanical watches I have become fascinated with manufacturers trying to achieve levels of accuracy that rival quartz. While I appreciated your detailed logs of accuracy of your many watches, I couldn’t help but wonder what your measuring conditions were? You never mentioned it. Were these watches sitting on watch winders in your climate controlled closet and taken out daily to measure? Or were you wearing these watches around, inside and outside, while you shower, while you sleep, while you drive, while you chop onions for cooking…. Having a COSC certified watch that can keep +2/-2 spd is commendable – but its even more commendable as a mechanical watch is put into differing orientations, temperature changes, and shocks day in and day out.

Is +2/-2 spd achievable when wearing your watch around? Or is it only achievable in laboratory conditions that make every test day identical?

Comment on Casio Lineage LCW-M510D Review by time traveler https://thetruthaboutwatches.com/2021/01/casio-lineage-lcw-m510d-review/#comment-38071 Sat, 13 Apr 2024 14:16:52 +0000 https://thetruthaboutwatches.com/?p=11339#comment-38071 I think it is worthwhile to point out that the watch will only listen to one of the six time transmitters – the one in your home zone. If you’re, say, located in Belgium and have your home zone set to the DCF77 transmitter in Germany, it will fail to receive the time signal from Fort Worth, should you ever be there. As someone who uses the (brilliant) world time feature on this watch on short trips, and not bother setting a temporarily different home zone, I found this out the hard way. I would have wished they’s also listen to the time transmitter closest to the currently selected world time zone.
